Nintendo DS 3D World Project

The aim of this project is to design a digital game in the format of the 80’s and 90’s interactive games that a new student can enjoy playing in addition to providing the student with information on the Faculty of Engineering, which will be beneficial to them for the remainder of the course. Currently within the Faculty of Engineering, all new students must attend an induction seminar where they are presented with information on the structure of the courses, background information on the university and faculty as well as details of staff at the school. These follow guidelines similar to the STAR project. The approach is in quite a formal environment and the students are encouraged to attend additional inductions in other areas such as a library induction and laboratory induction.

This project will provide the faculty with a novel way of engaging with the students in an informal way. This game which resides on a Nintendo DS will provide a new method of engaging the student and providing them with information that will help the student integrate into life at University quickly as well as show them where to go to get further information. This will also provide an induction tool for the faculty that can help provide new students with confidence.

There is a freely available Nintendo DS 3D world toolkit available at the website of Christopher O Connor. Please visit and download the toolkit and much of the other relevant material. Also, take time out to view the demos and movies.
