Location Based Geotagged Application Tour Guides

Geotagged Wikipedia Entries

It is possible to create an online site which plots geotagged Wikipedia entries on to Google Earth. These Wikipedia entries can then be sent to a user with a PDA/laptop (obviously connected to a WiFi or GPRS network) as one passes through the relevant wikipedia documented areas. It is basically like having a global excellent tour guide on the mobile device.

These wikipedia entries attached to places appears then for others to see, location-based information becomes user-generated content. Each place visited can then come tagged with the opinions of others. We are all aware of the sheer amount of location based information contained on Wikipedia. Imagine being able to tap into this from our location aware mobile devices as we roam especially when we need it. Thanks to the article at the Guardian by Ronan Fitzgerald for the inspiration for this project topic.

Task

There is a site dedicated to this Geocoordinates from Wikipedia for Google Earth created by Stefan Kuhn. Visit this site for further information. You could also check out Geobloggers.

The end-result should be a thesis focussed on a mobile website with geotagged Wikipedia entries on to Google Earth outlining your approach, results, discussion of system and evaluation.
